What actually differs by industry?
Less than most vendors imply, and more than nothing. The ledger is the same everywhere: one canonical balance per card, readable and writable by every connected channel. What changes is which instruments you need, which systems have to talk to each other, and what your finance team has to report.
Three things separate one industry from another in practice:
- Whether a dollar amount is the right product. Retail sells cash gift cards. Restaurants, wineries, hotels and salons sell experiences — a tasting, a treatment, a stay — which need to be dated, scan-redeemable, and consumed in one transaction rather than drawn down.
- How many tills have to agree. A single shop has one. A golf club has a pro shop, a clubhouse and a lesson book, frequently on different systems. That count is the single best predictor of whether a business outgrows its POS's built-in gift cards.
- Whether credit flows backwards. Retail and salons issue store credit constantly, for returns, cancellations and service recovery. Corporate programs barely do, but need bulk issuance and an API instead.
Not sure which page fits?
Pick by how you operate rather than by what you sell. A distillery with a cellar door and a restaurant has more in common with a hospitality group than with an online-only retailer. If you run several venues on different POS systems, start with restaurants and hospitality or golf clubs, whichever is closer — both are written around the multi-outlet case.
If you are comparing platforms rather than looking for setup detail, the buyer's guides cover the same industries with a decision framework instead, and the case studies show named businesses in each category with the results they saw.
Industry solutions: frequently asked questions
- Is Wrapped different depending on my industry?
- The platform is the same; the configuration and the instruments differ. Every industry gets one canonical balance across every connected channel. What changes is whether you need experience vouchers as well as cash gift cards, how many point-of-sale systems have to share that balance, and whether store credit flows back to customers regularly. The solution pages cover the setup for each.
- What if my industry is not listed?
- Pick the page closest to how you operate rather than to what you sell. The operational patterns repeat: multi-outlet venues on mixed POS systems behave alike whether they are golf clubs or hotels, and single-site retailers behave alike whether they sell records or clothing. Nothing about the platform is restricted to the industries listed.
- Do I need experience vouchers or just gift cards?
- Gift cards if customers buy a dollar amount; experience vouchers if the compelling gift is a defined thing — a tasting flight, a treatment, a round of golf, a night away. Vouchers typically sell at a higher average value and lock in the revenue upfront, and they redeem as a single transaction rather than drawing down a balance. Both sit on the same liability ledger.
- Can one gift card work across several venues on different POS systems?
- Yes — this is the main reason multi-venue operators move to a platform above the POS. Wrapped holds the canonical balance, so a card sold at a venue running Lightspeed Restaurant is redeemable at a sister site on Square, with the remaining balance accurate at both. Reporting breaks down by site so you can see which venue sells and which redeems.
- How many sites does a plan cover?
- Basic covers up to 3 sites, Pro up to 7, and Plus up to 12, with additional sites at $20 per month each. A site is a single business location or brand. Full pricing, including monthly gift card activation allowances and overage rates, is published on the pricing page.
