Compare / Toast Gift Cards
Wrapped vs Toast Gift Cards
Toast is a restaurant platform with gift cards built in. Wrapped is a gift card platform that sits above whatever POS you run. That difference — vendor-native versus POS-independent — is the whole comparison, and it decides which one fits your operation.
In 30 seconds
Toast Gift Cards are the right call for a single-brand restaurant running entirely on Toast in the United States, selling cash-value gift cards. One vendor, one contract, the tightest possible till workflow.
Wrapped is the right call when your gift card has to leave the Toast boundary: a second venue on a different POS, a retail or eCommerce arm, experience vouchers as a defined product, refund-to-credit, consolidated liability reporting across properties, or operating outside the US.
Be aware: Wrapped does not have a native Toast integration today. Toast venues run Wrapped through the Wrapped App alongside the Toast terminal. That works, but it is a genuine trade-off against a native integration — see the FAQ below.

Where the difference shows up: the ecosystem boundary
A Toast gift card is a Toast instrument. Sold on Toast online ordering, redeemed on a Toast terminal, reported inside Toast. Within one Toast restaurant that is a clean, well-integrated experience and there is nothing to fix.
The boundary bites the moment your business is bigger than one Toast site. A group with a flagship on Toast and a wine bar on Lightspeed Restaurant cannot issue one card that works at both. A restaurant that also sells merchandise or packaged product through Shopify has a gift card that stops at the restaurant door. A venue that wants to sell a chef's table or a tasting experience as a dated, QR-redeemable voucher rather than a dollar amount does not have that instrument at all. Wrapped holds the canonical balance above the POS layer, which is what makes one card work across a mixed estate.
The honest trade-off: no native Toast integration
Wrapped has native integrations with Lightspeed Retail and Restaurant, Square, Heartland, and Bopple, plus Shopify, Shopify Plus, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, and Lightspeed eCommerce. Toast is not on that list. Toast venues sell and redeem through the Wrapped App running alongside the Toast terminal, with online gifting handled by the Wrapped storefront.
In practice that means one extra device or browser tab at the counter for the gift card step. For a group already juggling multiple systems it is a small price for a single balance across the estate. For a single Toast restaurant with no other systems, it is friction you do not need — and Toast Gift Cards are the better answer. We would rather say that plainly than sell you a worse fit.
What restaurants and hospitality groups usually need
- Experience vouchers, not just cash. A tasting menu, a chef's table, a stay-and-dine package. These are dated products with a defined redemption, and they sell at a higher average value than open cash cards.
- One balance across venues. Guests do not think in terms of which venue owns which POS. A group gift card that works everywhere is the single most requested feature from multi-venue operators.
- Refund-to-credit. Turning a cancellation or a service-recovery gesture into store credit rather than cash keeps the revenue in the business.
- Group-level liability reporting. Finance needs total outstanding liability broken down by venue and channel, with aging — not one report per POS instance.
The wider evaluation framework, including how Toast, Square, Givex, and GiftUp stack up against each other, is in the buyer's guide for restaurants.
When Toast Gift Cards alone are the right call
One brand, one or more venues all on Toast, in the United States, selling cash-value gift cards, with no retail or eCommerce arm and no need for experience vouchers. In that shape the native option is well integrated, costs no extra vendor relationship, and adds no steps at the counter. Adding a platform above it would be complexity without payoff.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Wrapped integrate with Toast?
- Not natively — Toast is not currently one of Wrapped's native POS integrations. Toast restaurants use Wrapped through the Wrapped App, which staff run alongside the Toast terminal to sell and redeem gift cards, plus the Wrapped hosted storefront for online gifting. That covers the omnichannel case, but it is an extra step at the counter compared with a native integration like Lightspeed Restaurant, Square, or Bopple. If your operation is Toast-only and you want the tightest possible till workflow, Toast Gift Cards are the more natural fit.
- Doesn't Toast already have gift cards built in?
- Yes. Toast Gift Cards are a native part of the Toast platform, covering digital and physical cards sold and redeemed on Toast POS and Toast online ordering. For a restaurant that runs entirely on Toast, they are the natural starting point — one vendor, one contract, no extra integration. The limitation is the ecosystem boundary: a Toast gift card is a Toast instrument, so it does not reach venues, retail sites, or eCommerce stores that run on anything else.
- When would a Toast restaurant add Wrapped?
- The common trigger is a second venue or a second system. A group that runs Toast at one restaurant and a different POS at another cannot expose one gift card balance across both. The same applies to a restaurant with a retail arm on Shopify or BigCommerce, a venue selling experience vouchers as a defined product rather than a dollar amount, or a group that needs consolidated liability reporting across properties. Those are the cases where a platform above the POS earns its place.
- Can I move existing Toast gift card balances into Wrapped?
- Yes. Wrapped supports importing existing gift cards — codes, remaining balances and expiry dates — from another platform, so outstanding cards keep working for your customers. Self-managed migration import is included on every plan, and premium onboarding ($300 one-time) adds managed migration and setup assistance. Check your Toast agreement for any export or notice terms before you switch.
- Is Wrapped available outside the United States?
- Yes. Wrapped is operated from New Zealand and used by retailers, restaurants, and hospitality groups worldwide, with customers across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Europe. Toast is predominantly a United States restaurant platform, so international availability is one of the practical differences worth checking against your own footprint.
