Wrapped vs Shopify Gift Cards
Shopify ships native gift cards, and for a Shopify-only business selling plain cash-value cards they do the job. Wrapped earns its place the moment either of two things is true: part of your business runs outside Shopify (a non-Shopify POS in a venue, third-party online ordering, several sites to keep in sync) or you want something a dollar balance can't do, like experience vouchers, refund-to-credit, Apple and Google Wallet, or a branded gifting storefront. Here's where the two actually differ, and how they work together.
Use Shopify gift cards alone if you're a single-store Shopify or Shopify Plus merchant whose entire customer journey lives inside Shopify checkout, Shopify POS, and Shopify Email.
Add Wrapped if you operate any non-Shopify channel (Lightspeed Restaurant, Square, Heartland, Bopple), want a standalone branded gifting storefront that runs without a Shopify dependency, want experience vouchers as a product, want Apple/Google Wallet integration, want refund-to-credit at the POS, run multi-site sync, or want marketing automation outside of Shopify Email.

Where the difference shows up: omnichannel
Shopify gift cards are tied to the Shopify ledger. A card sold via Shopify checkout, redeemed at Shopify POS, refunded back to Shopify. That round-trip works cleanly. The friction starts when a redemption needs to happen at a different POS, or when a balance sold through a third-party channel needs to flow into Shopify.
Wrapped sits above the Shopify gift card layer and synchronises balances with every other connected channel. A Shopify-bought card is live in real time at any connected non-Shopify POS, and a partial redemption at one channel is immediately reflected on every other. For multi-venue brands and apparel retailers running in-store + online, this is the headline difference.
Experience vouchers and store credit
Shopify gift cards are cash-value instruments. If you want to sell a defined experience (a tasting menu, a stay-and-play package, a class) Shopify treats it as a product and a discount, not as a voucher with its own redemption flow. Wrapped supports experience vouchers natively: branded landing page, scheduled email delivery, QR-code redemption, and the same liability ledger as cash gift cards.
Refund-to-credit works the same way. Issuing store credit on a return, keeping revenue inside the business instead of refunding to the original payment method, is a one-tap action in Wrapped, integrated with the POS or eCommerce checkout. On Shopify alone, this typically requires a workaround.
When Shopify gift cards alone are the right call
If you sell only through Shopify and a plain cash-value card is all you need, the native option covers it. It's included, it's well built, and adding anything on top would be overhead without a benefit.
What you'd be doing without: experience vouchers as a dated, scannable product; refund-to-credit; Apple and Google Wallet; scheduled delivery and personalised messages; a branded gifting storefront that isn't tied to your Shopify theme; bulk and corporate gifting; and liability reporting broken down by channel. None of those need a second sales channel to be worth having, plenty of Shopify-only brands add Wrapped for the gifting experience alone.
The moment any of those conditions changes (a clubhouse, a second venue, a third-party ordering platform, a Klaviyo migration) adding Wrapped pays back quickly because the program scales without a re-platforming step.
Frequently asked questions
- Doesn't Shopify already have gift cards built in?
- Yes. Shopify's native gift card product works out of the box for businesses operating only inside Shopify. Shopify checkout, Shopify POS, and Shopify Email. The case for adding Wrapped starts the moment a Shopify merchant operates outside that ecosystem: a separate POS at a hospitality venue, third-party online ordering, mobile wallet integration, multi-site sync, marketing automation outside of Shopify Email, or experience vouchers as a defined product.
- Can I use both Shopify gift cards and Wrapped at the same time?
- Yes. Wrapped's Shopify integration syncs gift cards as native Shopify gift card products, so customers buy them through Shopify checkout the way they always have. The difference is what happens after: the same balance is now redeemable on a connected POS like Lightspeed Restaurant or Square, in Apple/Google Wallet, and across any other connected channel, and the Shopify balance is the shared balance.
- What about Shopify Plus?
- Shopify Plus has the same native gift card model as standard Shopify, with extra customization options. Wrapped adds the same value to Shopify Plus stores: omnichannel reach, experience vouchers, refund-to-credit, and the ability to connect non-Shopify POS or online ordering platforms.
- Does Wrapped support Shopify POS?
- Yes. Wrapped works alongside Shopify POS for in-store sale and redemption. The headline benefit appears once you also need a non-Shopify channel (a clubhouse on Lightspeed Restaurant, a coffee bar on Square, third-party mobile ordering) where Shopify POS native gift cards can't reach.
